Description
The Spinosaurus, also called the "thorny lizard," is a genus that lived in what is now North Africa during the Cretaceous Period, approximately 106 to 93.5 million years ago. The distinctive features of the Spinosaurus are the spinous processes of the dorsal vertebrae, which were about 1.69 meters long and probably connected to the skin to form a sail-like structure. Some researchers suspect that these spines were surrounded by muscles and formed a long hump, though the function of this structure is still unclear. It may have been used for thermoregulation or display. Recent estimates suggest that Spinosaurus was nearly 18 meters long and weighed up to 9 tons, making it the largest known carnivorous dinosaur, surpassing other large theropods such as Tyrannosaurus and Giganotosaurus.
